Army Cargo Pants

What Are Army Cargo Pants?

Army cargo pants are one of the most military inspired fashion designs to make it onto the mainstream markets. The pants were originally designed in the 1930′s by the British army during World War Two, however it wasn’t until the 1990′s that the army cargo pant made its way onto high street shelves. The main difference between the original design and the current form is that the British army only made use of one cargo pocket, which was located on the left side of the pant leg.

Although the British were responsible for the inception of cargo pants, it was the United States that made them what they are today. The American military first issued cargo pants in the 1940′s, however the main difference is that the United States military made use of two pockets rather than one. By the time of the Korean War these pants were issued to every soldier as a standard uniform requirement.

During the Vietnam War further improvements to the cargo pants were made. Firstly the pockets were strengthened, and secondly the material of the pants were made lighter to enhance their practicality. In the coming years further modifications were made, including the introduction of the camouflage cargo pant. Other modifications also included the use of the rip-stop cotton and a tie at the bottom of the leg to securely fasten the trousers against the boot.

Army Cargo Pants in Fashion

During the 1990′s army cargo pants gained a reputation in the fashion world. It started when musicians and hip-hop artists began wearing them; and eventually spread from the military surplus stores and onto the high street. During the nineties there wasn’t a single clothes store that didn’t stock military inspired cargos!

The trend did eventually fade away, however it still lives on in general day to day fashion. Military cargo pants can be used for a variety of different functions, from casual to business. The army cargo pant is a particular favourite among labour workers because of their strength and durability. The rip-stop material and way of design also allows for ease of use when carrying tools and equipment around.

Army Cargo Pant Materials

Although there are a few different materials that are used, the cotton cargo pants are the most popular. This is due to their durability and the fact that they are very easy to move in. Cotton cargo pants also have a very unique stitching method, which gives them a rip-stop ability. This means that they have increased strength and are more difficult to tear than other forms of trousers.

Army Cargo Pant Styles
